Bulkheads, also referred to as partitions, are structures or walls used at the front of a flatbed trailer (or on the rear of the tractor) to protect the driver against shifting cargo during a front-end collision.
One function of a bulkhead is to keep the driver and passenger safe. Commercial vehicles often carry heavy equipment and tools in the cargo area. Shifting cargo can be dangerous, but it can be kept in the proper area with a bulkhead. If a driver suddenly breaks or swerves, the equipment in the back of the commercial motor vehicle is kept secure and is separated from the driver and passengers.
Serious injuries can result if cargo is not contained by a bulkhead. Shifting equipment creates distractions, accidents, and an unsafe work environment. Bulkheads help provide safety in the vehicle, the same way a strong commercial roadside assistance program helps provide safety for the vehicle itself.
